TWIN SHADOW- CASTLES IN THE SNOW

I'm always sooo late to like some, and I mean some, current trendoid music.
I really like this song.
"You're my favourite daydream/I'm your famous nightmare"= great way to start a song.
Probably the last thing I'll hear and like in 2010.

SALUTE!

Perhaps theee Rap song of 2010?
Juelz Santana/Jim Jones/ Cam'ron. NUff said.
SALUTE DIPSET

Still pending

Calling on someone, anyone, to teach me...
Juan Maclean's remix from this year.
More to come very very shortly. Hush and close your eyes, breathe, etc.
CAN'T SLEEP!

sex dwarf/glitz rock

Just got re-reminded about this song.
Absolutely love the synth line, which is why Felix Da Housecat's version is so good.
I couldn't find that one, so substituted it with GLITZ ROCK which is off the totally flawless record. KITTENZ AND THEE GLITZ
It is a perfect 10/10 record. One of my favourite house records of all times. The roof is on fire!!!!

Rest In Power Magnolia Shorty

"Early Monday morning 28 year-old New Orleans rapper Magnolia Shorty, born Renetta Lowe, was shot multiple times. She was found by police on the city’s east side alongside a man, inside of a crashed car. Shorty became a part of Cash Money Records in the early ’90s after members of the Hot Boys who she had played with as kids in the Magnolia Projects brought her around Baby and Ronald “Slim” Williams. She was given her name by rapper Magnolia Slim, now also deceased.

CRANES -Everywhere

I've always loved this song and this band. Just dusted off a copy that friend once burned me like 10 years ago. I need to buy the physical copy, because it's totally worth it and I need it visible in my collection. It would sit next to the Cocteau Twins. Maybe at night, I'd hear them have sing-alongs, and then I could finally get some sleep.
Very beautiful stuff.

Joker- TRON

Tron the Legacy is coming out this week (not really my thang. Though, I'm still yet to experience a 3-D movie. maybe this should be my first?), so I thought this would be an appropriate post.
Joker, king of grimey, wobbly, dirty dubstep, never disappoints. The man see's music in purple!
This is Megatron 3-D bass for your speakers. Be Careful, some hands might actually pop out, grab you by the ears and smash your face through the screen.

BEST HOT SAUCE IN THE WORLD.

Perfect amount of heat and smoke. Tap some tap into your trap!

RAOOUL-Jail Bait Core (The Dan Song)

This is from the RAOOUL/SKINNED TEEN split Jail-Bait Core/Bazooka Smooth LP from 1993.

I got my very own limited copy when i was 14, the same age as these girls were when they made this master blaster. It freaked the fuck out of me. I was, and still am, jealous that I never made this record. Wah. It screams like a dear diary, or, rather a fuck you diary.
If you like this song, check out the rest of the record on you tube. The songs range from 49 seconds to a minute-and-a-half.

"Love Happens" by Valerie Long

Lisa Crystal Carver/Roller Derby/Suck Dog

Roller Derby was one of my favourite zine's growing up. A bit intense for a 15 year old, but i was drawn into Lisa's world. I used to wish I could see her performance art group Suck Dog. A bit intense I know. Lisa is an intense survivor of intense. Read Drugs Are Nice and go figure. I was re-skimming through the Roller Derby anthology tonight, and it is still intense, even for a 30 year old.

My Wedding Song

Honey, I love you already. Now let's get married. And, this is my wedding song. You can have your own, and maybe we can mix our two songs together, but not mash them, mix them, and then eat cake.
I love you honey. Come to me now.
xr
And I'm sorry honey, that this is a picture of a bat, so just close your eyes, and imagine us together forever now...1,2,3,4.
I love you baby. Whoever you are.

Remember John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy (May 29, 1917 – November 22, 1963)

I think all rhetoric and hypothetical thinking may stem from this incident. What would the world be like if things grew organically, without assassinations, if the people actually got to support and praise, and if speech were free, without price tags on heads.
Just saying, remember.

Warpaint-Undertow

This song feels like I'm playing a tennis, and this is the person on my receiving end's anthem.
It's really beautiful.

Diamond, “Shots Fired” MP3 + Getting Your Car Repo’d then Returned

I triangle DIAMOND (relatively speaking, triangles are the hearts, like diamonds are love)
One of the princesses of crunk rapping over Lauren and Eminem- nice appropriation of princesses-ness, I mean Diamond.
I think Diamond is hot. And Princess too. Crime Mobess

Introducing OFWGKTA: Earl

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All are a 10-deep hip-hop collective. All of them are under 18. They are artists/producers/rappers/video makers etc.
Their stuff is dark, they spit psychosis. Deranged flows. Mean mouths.
They do everything themselves in a bleak, cold way.
I hope they support each other emotionally cz these kids have weird things going on in their minds.
Meet Earl. This rhyme is siiiiiick, in a bevy of ways, all mashed into a blender and spat out to twist your brain.
They embody the internet generation in so many ways.
I'll post more about the others in a tick.
CRAZY

There is something so good about this...

Melody... this everything!
Relating, and rhyming an open door with an open sore.

HUNGRY FOR THE POWER

Azari&iii. HELLOOOOO.
Some of my favourite production out there at the moment.
The E.P is great, full of current nostalgia. Perfectly paced B.P.M's and sounds to match.
Peep the video below....DARK, but balances the light cloudy chords. And I love the demon voice vs the classic house phrase sing song.
I think this could be yin-yang music.

JEAN GENET

Possibly my favourite writer of all time
Reading 'The Lady of The Flowers' at the moment. 'The Thiefs Journal' is a must read. There is none other than him.

(from chant d'amour)

ALL ABOARD THE K.L.F TRIP

Ok, I banned myself from buying music on ebay a few years ago. Those rare MALARIA! 12's and albums were setting me back some gelt. Not to mention the super pricey, rare French Legions Black Metal was painting corpse paint all over my wallet.
Today, however, I splurged out on some rare K.L.F records and 12". This stuff is hard to get now. I just had to. It's justified (and ancient!!)
These guys are total trippers, their philosophy is awesome (I will write a rant on it some time soon) and their music is pure energy.
Wherever Trancentral is, I wanna go there, NOW
Oh and if anyone knows where to get a copy of their Ambient record, please let me know. It's bliss and it saved my life once (another rant, for another time)

Rusko feat. Amber Coffman "Hold On"

I really like the Rusko album that came out earlier this year.
This is my favourite track off the album: HOLD ON f/ Amber Coffman from Dirty Projectors.
This collaboration works really well
Check the album, it's called O.M.G

VINTAGE ALBUM OF THE WEEK= REDD KROSS 'BORN INNOCENT'

Been lamenting on this big time. Such a great album. Brash and bratty.
From 1982, this is the band's best bashing for sure. Full of pop culture obsessions, and covers Charles Manson's "Cease to Exist".
Like

BURN OUT

Katy B. & Benga

Such great stuff coming out of the U.K at the moment. This track is an indication of that.
Catchy with big bass. Winning combination!

POLVO- THERMAL TREASURE

Sorry, don't know how to post songs without going to youtube.
But this album really smashed my being. It was the first record, meaning literal piece of wax, that I ruined. I took it away with me, on a family vacation, and it melted in the sun. Meaning I NEGLECTED IT. And now I'm in therapy and miserable.
Own this album or be sad. Simple.

SUPERBALL

Just sitting at home listening to the remaining winter rain drops fall and voila! I think of Helium, the band, not the element.
DIRT OF LUCK. Perhaps, could, might be my best 90's album, when refined to "covers dominated in blue." Hand in hand with Nevermind, of coarse.
Ash Bowie (POLVO...see above) produced.
I played the Kill Rock Stars SXSW showcase a few years ago, with Mary Timony and I was all shook up.
She really made something special here. Really.

MZ. BRATT "SELECTA"

WU TANG CLAN PERFORM THE ENTIRE ENTER THE 36 CHAMBERS!!!

Still probably my favourite hip hop record of all time, smack bang in the golden era.
Still an absolute classic banger till this day, some 17 years later.

LIZZY MERCIER DESCLOUX

Vibing on the later Lizzy stuff. I think I took the obvious for granted (late 70's), Realised there is a macrocosm of later stuff she did which fused with my biology. Nice algae, honey.
(And good balance too. Cigarette for a moustache= new gymnastics)

I like...being crushed....slowly

Fuck what they're calling this style of music. Seriously, I would rather name a new drug for a pharmaceutical company before I name a new musical genre. Well maybe I wouldn't, but why can't things simply be?
Why have to allude to things past and ruin the surprise of sound?
Anyways, I really like SALEM, I think they might be the most interesting band out there. When i first heard all this; music that makes you feel like your're slowly being crushed between a drum machine and distorto synth fuckery and crunk juice and darkness itself, I was all 'yeeeaaah'. See below to get the drift.

SALEM

R.I.P LOUISE BOURGEOIS (25 December 1911 – 31 May 2010)

A truely incredible woman and artist. Nearly reached 100 years of age.
A huge inspiration. Recognised as the founder of 'Confessional Art'.
I am a disciple of hers then, for what do I make, if not Confessional Art?

R.I.P DENNIS HOPPER (17 MAY 1936-29 MAY 2010)

A great actor/writer/director.
Trailer for a film he made in 1980 called OUT OF THE BLUE.
Linda Manz' performance is amazing. One of the greatest/strongest/girl with attitude characters EVER!
True punk spirit.

I'm in a U.F.O bound for Ellen Allien

I've always been a big fan of this minimal ms.
This week I've been merry-go-rounding round her especially.

"Way Out" video below. I think one could safely put together a 'best of' of her work, with variations in tracks, and no matter the outcome, the compilation would reveal how great she is. Maybe this is the ultimate roulette/anything that involves throwing a dice music.

How to brew Green Tea properly if you don't have a clip-on thermometer

ZOLA JESUS- CLAY BODIES

I know I'm like an Ice Age too late on this....My bad. I don't know why I slept on this girl for so long. Seriously. I think it's because I thought the name sounded like a washed out band and to be honest, I'm a bit over the washed out thang, so I just bypassed the name and songs every time I came across it's/her mention. Sorry! I would make it up to you if I could.
Sparse and dark. two words that set off wedding bells in my head.
Fits our True Blood generation for sure.

M.I.A Born Free

New video/ first single off M.I.A's untitled album, out in June.
It's not as progressive/out there as Gaga, but it's still worth a mention...
Just joking.
Politics is real. Knowledge is power. Triangular shoulders (which were Klaus Nomi's thang way before) wigs and big glasses do not tell the truth, do not educate and do not change the world.
I respect what gaga is doing for gender/sexuality, but her idea's/video's are too saturated in style and eye candy, that the 12 year old girls watching them don't notice anything but the crazy costumes. It's a form of hypnotism. The people who see her significance and titillations are older, high brow, educated theorists. In essence, the converted.

This is an interesting article about the Lady gaga Telephone clip

SWANS-I'll Cry For You/Raping A Slave

I think i'll spend the next few blogs on posting my favourite bands/songs from my favourite era/approach to/of music.
I'll start with SWANS.
This might get boring for you if you don't like loud, obnoxious, blood stained, metallic, shrilling, guttural sounding things

(I'll Cry For You)

(Raping A Slave)

Sara Sohn/Vegan Marshmallows (Sweet and Sarah)

http://www.sweetandsara.com

Sarah Sohn is my hero.
She makes vegan marshmallows and my oh my, what sweet, fluffy, heavenly marshmallows she makes. People often ask me what I miss most about being vegan (uh, nothing. Why would I miss partaking in pillaging the earth, killing creatures, wasting water, etc) . Is it the cheese (oh, I make my own ricottage cheese and it's pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey-where-the-tail-is-meant-to-go, good!)....Is it the...(I cut in abruptly), No fool, it's the marshmallows.
Circa 2001, right before i became vegan I was a candy addict. I had a serious problem, seriously. Anyways, I would always have marshmallows and a lighter on me. I would sit at the back of a car, or be wherever I was, with a lighter in my hand, and burn marshmallows into melty heavens and eat them....
My next mission is to make a vegan marshmallow (wo)man. i would snuggle with it every night, without doubt.

Scene from Robert Bresson's 1956 masterpiece PICKPOCKET

This movie is a must. In my top 10 for sure. Based on Dostoevsky's Crime and Punisment...
This scene doesn't ruin the film, but rather highlights the fluidity, beauty, silence and suspense that saturate it.

Why cup a Joe when you can mug a Joe ? !

this band will always play on...at least to my ears

KLAUS NOMI

Man of style and self.
Countertenor
On earth for a short visit...
Klaus Nomi is a figure you could imagine a little kid running up to, stopping at his feet, looking up from his black slacks to his triangular tuxedo top half, slowly becoming wide eyed, then horrified, then breaking out into a snotty cry. Then Klaus would look down at the kid with an animated smile and eyes to match, and extend his hand out to the kid who would suddenly damn his own smile into a giggle, which would roll on forever and ever.

Electrik Red will electrocute!!

and i mean electroCUTE!
Seriously, How To be A Lady: Volume 1, was the most slept on and under-appreciated Rn'B album of 2009. Filled with jams, co-written and produced by The-Dream, lady's with attitude supergroup= MEGA
How To Be A Lady: Volume 2 is coming out sometime this year, so get schooled!!

Ministry- Revenge

From Ministry's first record: With Sympathy, which Al Jourgensen called "an abortion of an album"...1981, synth pop, pre industrial slaughterhouse Ministry. Same antics, different sound. But always as good.

Decline of Western Civilization

Here's part of the Germs segment from Penelope Spheeris' amazing documentary about the late 70's/early 80's L.A Hardcore scene: The Decline of Western Civilization. Go rent it out.

A salute to El-P and Def Jux

It came to my attention that the indie hip hop label Def Jux are taking a hiatus. This truly marks the end of an era. Definitive Jux were responsible for changing the course of underground hip hop. They had their own style, sound, aesthetic, (doom-boom-bap), with artists like Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox, RJD2, Mr Lif, Cage, founder El-P and many oter Jukies.
El-P bought a sci fi flavour to beat making and subject matter, presenting a grim Orwellian audio world.
Progressive and revolutionary, El-P and his def Jux cohorts are responsible for carrying the legacy of hip hop forward and beyond with their own dialect and gospel.
I salute!

You can read a statement by El-P explaining his decision of change here:

Cocteau Twins

I have so much time and space for this band, particularly because of the way they utilise time and space in their work.
Cocteau twins were a Scottish band, who formed in the late 70's, amidst the new wave world. Airy and dark, other worldly, heavenly, their music is pretty much ethereal goth bliss.
Elizabeth Fraser's vocals are like dream pop scats.
I don't know what else to say, but I'm on a bit of a Cocteau Twins binge this week and I like it..

Progressive tweeting

While we (arguably) digress through our twitter/tweeting, birds have progressed through theirs and their forward flying.

"French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot creates works by drawing on the rhythms of daily life to produce sound in unexpected ways.

For his installation in The Curve, Boursier-Mougenot creates a walk-though aviary for a flock of zebra finches, furnished with electric guitars and other musical instruments. As the birds go about their routine activities, perching on or feeding from the various pieces of equipment, they create a captivating, live soundscape."

The Monks Live in Germany - Complication

The Monks were a band of American GI'S, who were based in Germany and formed in the 60's.
They shaved their heads into monks tonsure's and wore black uniforms, with nooses as neck ties.

Ahead of their time no doubt.

GINA X PERFORMANCE- NO G.D.M

A German duo, consisting of vocalist Gina Kikoine and writer/producer Zeus B. Held. Gina X Performance released about 4 albums in all, but their first Nice Mover (1979) was their definitive. Gina X toyed around and toed the line of gender and sexuality. Their electro pop disco was obviously more obscure than the glittery disco of the time, but this album totally twinkles. Possibly my favourite of the era. So good.

DAISIES

Beneath lies the opening scene from Vera Chytilová's 1966 Czech New Wave masterpiece DAISIES (Sedmikrásky).
Awash in a surrealist technicolour dream coat that clothes a brazen feminist punk attitude, this film is a gem. Full of life, friendship and supposition, which is pretty much the meaning of it all.

farewell to a Melbourne fixture and sound institution

How often do you walk around your city and notice both the hidden little nooks, be it, a piece of graffiti hidden on top of some balcony on some corner, a newly opened shop, or a big old landmark, and realise it's what gives your city it's character and you your bearings? We navigate through space, we socialise around it, we create and perform in it, it is vital to our existence.
It's a sad day, with the announcement that a Melbourne fixture and institution of sound is closing it's doors. One man down in the army of venues that line the Collingwood/Fitzroy border of Johnston street. I live around the corner from The Tote. I smile every time I make my way past it, then strut along passing the Birmingham, and a bit further up, the Old Bar. On any given night you can find something going on between the postered walls and dirt sodden carpets of these bars.
I run a party called GROUSE. We had our first summer series up in the Cobra Bar. On some nights,  it would reach over 40 degree's. Two old school power fans would try offer relief from the heat, to no avail. The beer garden downstairs, a square meeting ground for the smokers, and a place to gather fresh air. Oh the rants I had out there. The arguments, the laughter, the vodka soda's, cheap as chips, strong as fists....
The rider, kept in the front bar, on the whiteboard, the famous crossing off of boxes. I admit, I did 'borrow' a drink or two from a band or few....
The mighty jukebox. Punk classics, hand chosen by the people. I did find myself some-what frustrated, drunk and wanting to dance  looking for some hip hop on there. None to be seen. But that would always be forgotten soon enough when on came something from any of the many Black Flag records that slept in there.
Oh the classic pool games. How many people I beat on that green pasture. Singlehandedly, or with my pal Lia. I think it might have been my lucky table...
And the very many bands from overseas, interstate and  locally, playing to the swaying people in the pit, the signature dugout that was the room.
I don't know if this is just the inevitable, the winds of change. Things come and go. Imagine every lost treasured space that has existed through time. What would happen if we saved them all? It's crazy to think; who decides history? They are unaware they are, for they do not know the past they are demolishing. They have not lived in the context of it's structures. They do not walk the streets and see the cultural significance such institutions have. And that is the danger. The law makers, in their routine sweeps, think 'pay up or go', or whatever it is they think, (I don't know because I don't think like that), and have no idea of the destruction of history they are causing.
I could go on, but this must end, like everything does, even the goddamn Tote.
