LL Cool (Grace) J(ones)

Still one of my favourite LL Cool J jams.
So raunchy, still, to this day.
Hot stuff.
The sample comes from Grace Jones My Jamaican Guy, of coarse.
Great usage.

I'm going to see HTRK tonight.
Just listening to this stuff (below), eating baked vegetables.
About to brew a dandelion tea.

FATIMA AL QADIRI

I'm a big fan of this ladies work.
The E.P GENRE-SPECIFIC XPERIENCE came out today.
GET IT.
She also goes by the name Ashay. She started making music in Kuwait, when she was nine, in response to the trauma from being in a war torn city. She now lives in New York.

She speaks subtle politics through her song titles and videos. Her music is instrumental.

AMAZING

Possessed To Skate

I skated hard when I was 16-17-18.
Then annoying grown up stuff made me stop.
I was good. I did mean kick flips and frontside flips.
I'm psyched to start skating again.
I'll be careful.
Eternally a teenage boy.

EGG RAID ON MOJO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some Old Bullshit= Best Beasties album for sure.
Then Paul's Boutique, then: Ill Communication, then Check Your head then Liscence to Ill then Hello Nasty.
Throw in Aglio E Olio in the middle of all of that or something, as an interlude.

OMG I'M FUCKING AMPED RIGHT NOW. I WANNA SMASH SOME SHIT UP OR SOMETHING.
WAAAAAAAAA

LUSCIOUS JACKSON + relates radness

NOSTALGIA.
Luscious Jackson rocked my world and locked my jaw in '94. I got NATURAL INGREDIENTS on vinyl. Baby blue vinyl.
Do I need to go through the history?
Kate Schellenbach used to drum for the Beastie Boys in their very early incarnation, before Luscious Jackson.
Grand Royal released Natural Ingredients.
They formed in '91.
Luscious Jackson's biggest hit was definitely Naked Eye. ('97)
They broke up in 2000.
In 1996 Vivian Trimble and Jill Cunniff from the band recorded a record under the name Kostars. 'Klassics With a K' was a dreamy album with lots of little toy keyboards and acoustic guitars and pretty harmonies.
Schellenbach and Josephine Wiggs (bassist for The Breeders) were girlfriends and released a 7" called THE KIMS WE LOVE, under the name Ladies Who Lunch. It featured 2 covers- A Sonic Youth one (Bull in The heather) and a Pixies one (Gigantic).
A genius concept indeed.
Anyways, this is like a history class, or Herstory class rather.
This stuff was such a major influence on me. I owe some of my blood cells to all the songs/projects below. Or a thousand breaths...

NEW NAS!!!!!!!! NASTY!!!!!!!

Nas sounds the best over these kind of beats. Minimal breaks. His flow has a mind of it's own.
Trajectory that treads from the mind to the heart to the lungs to the ether.
Respect to God's Son for always keeping true to himself. Nas never tries to bend his character to make it fit with the rap of the moment.
There's always complaints about how he's a bad beat selector, but can you imagine Nas raping over anything else but the beats he chooses? His essence and style shoot perfectly across his choices.
The King of Queens. Nas is in a borough of his own.
xxx

NittyScottMC-Auntie Maria's Crib

sweet smooth flows. Salute to the 90's.
Like a blunted Butterfly.

OLIVE- you're not alone/CHICANE-Saltwater

Love the chilled out jungle vibes of Olive's You're not Alone.
This song touches my heart.
There were so many songs of this ilk coming out in the late 90's.
Here are 2.

Cibo Matto- Beef Jerky

Dont' mind some primal strips faux jerky.
Love Cibo Matto.
Their whole debut album Viva! La Women, was full of sweet jams. And every song title had an edible thing in it.
I heard they've been working on a new album. Yes!!!
They went on to form a side supergroup, Butter 08, with Russell Simins (Jon Spencer blues Explosion), Rick Lee (Skeleton Key) and Mike Mills. That was a pretty great album too.
Anyways...

new month, new Harmony Korine

The Spinanes

In 1996, I went to Israel with my high school.
It was a life changing trip in many, many ways.
The Spinanes 'Strand' came out that year and became a sound track to my movements.
Weird, to put the warm desert of the Holy Land and the Spinanes together, in one sentence and experience.
But something about it worked.
Rebecca gates voice sounds sun lit.

DON TRIP

DON TRIP= TRUTH IN THE BOOTH.
poet.
All his video's are just him in the booth, one shot, one angle, one take, one good rapper.

LOVE LIFE

I loved love life.
I saw them once in San francisco at the Hemlock Tavern. Only a circle of candles dimly lit the room.
'The Rose he lied by'' was one of my favourite records of 2000, when it came out. It was released on Troubleman Unlimited who were totally my favourite label of that era. They released the radest stuff of the late 20th, early 21st century (haha)
The entire record swept me off my broom stick.
Their second record 'Here Is Night, Brothers, Here the Birds Burn' came out on Jagjaguwar in 2002.
Here's the opening track: LISTEN LOUDLY
Do what it is says, become the song, listen loudly
Katrina Ford, who I always thought was a man, listening to the first LOve Life record, went on to form Celebration who are still around today

Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire

So coolloquial.
Produced by EL-P, which is such a perfect coupling.
I'm psyched about this. Sparse simple dark head nod perfect amount of here now abstract sensibility.

Severed Heads- Dead Eyes Opened

One of my favourite Australian groups. More of a group than a band.
Tape loops and synth soups.
slurp.

PAS DE DEUX-Lonely Guys

"WE ARE SOCIALITES
WE ARE SO COMMERCIALIZED"

Pretty timeless words.
Preemptive strike!
This is from the early 80's, duh!
So great

Jhene Aiko "Stranger"

My favourite RN'B song of the year thus far.
Soft and sexy.
mmmmmmm

DEATH GRIPS

One of my favourite rappers out there at the moment.
Again, hip hop is so exciting again. So many gem jam joints going on in the genre.
It feels like an infinite hyperlink law of physics or something...
But I love the production/style/sonic aesthetic/consistency of this guy.
Zach Hill from the awesome band HELLA produced this record (Ex Military).
RAW AND CRUNCHY. Just like kale.

GUILLOTINE:

Art of Noise-Moments In Love

Nothing noisy about this.
I think this might be one of my favourite love songs EVER.
TRUE ESSENCE.

ABSOLUTE BODY CONTROL

Was listening to ABC a lot last week.
It's good music to listen to when you're on the train, looking across the wintery world.
They need to have free hot water taps on trains. B.Y.O tea.
This music does have a warmth to it, it's in the high hats.

It's a Fine Day

CLASSIC
Opus III-It's a fine day
OPTIMISM could be a future genre?

beautiful beats. Same name different songs!!!

My two favourite producers at the moment, Clams Casino and Jim Jonsin.
Love these beats soooooo much.
lush!!!!!!!
Both called motivation

(Lil B raps over this)

(Kelly Rowland sings over this, and to be honest I don't think it does the beat justice. Sorry to say)

The Weekend-What You Need

The best RN'B out there right now. And super sexy. Big fan.

This synth riff is as good as a Black Sabbath guitar one.

Nu Shooz- I Can't Wait

This song seemed to follow me everywhere I went whilst I was over in the U.S
I didn't mind one bit. Guess it could follow me, Nu Shooz and all. My, what sweet little footsteps you got.

Sisters of Mercy-A Rock And A Hard Place

Oh man, FIRST AND LAST AND ALWAYS has been on repeat in my world, club momentum, for about a month now.
Sound track to my tour for sure. Listening to this whilst driving in the pitch black night, through the South, was everything I need in life.
Aesthetics are aural. Sonic simplicity to sail through life.

UNTER NULL-Destroy Me

i'm in America listening to industrial goth electro. And a lot of german music.
i love everything about this.
makes me want to get out all the poetry I wrote when I was 15 and read them over intense, dramatic, fast, beautiful, harsh music.
Think I might do exactly that when I get home.

i was craving this like crazy

I'm on tour in the U.S
I noticed I didn't have any Betty Davis with me. ???????
Bad Romy.
Got to El Paso like 2 minutes ago and bought "Betty Davis"- Betty Davis straight away.
Need it for the drive across America! Duh!
It'll probably be the first record I put on my turntable when I return home.

HELL YEAH

LORDS OF ACID "I SIT ON ACID"
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

I'm maximising my mornings.
Probably my favourite thing about touring America.

STRINGS OF LIFE

Oh boy. This took things to a new level.
I just love the beginning, the wavering strings. The seeming nonchelance, but it's so from the heart. Seems like this idea was just bubbling and bubbling and had to be freed, urgently.
Derrick May- father and genius.
My idea of euphoria.

ROLAND SH2

I was in the studio last weekend.
My fingers danced around this baby.
Love it. Classic. It can stay at my HOUSE any day.
(I'm a good babysitter)

LONZINE WRIGHT- Stop The Taxi

Apt for heading to nYC.
Inspiration for keeping things minimal and percussive.

Night of the Hunter

Finally got around the watching this film tonight.
WOW.
So impressive.
The suspense got me chilled! Robert Mitchem, Shelley Winters and Lilian Gish star.
The 50's are still one of my favourite decades of Hollywood cinema.
Beware of the Preacher!

TWILIGHT ZONE: The Obsolete Man

I am off to America in a couple of weeks.
I AM GETTING THE ENTIRE TWILIGHT ZONE SERIES ON DVD. Call it a future reward!
I am a huge, huge fan of the series. Rod Serling is a genius. His comments on war, society, government and racism via horror, drama, science fiction are still, uncannily, relevant today.
This is one of my favourite episodes....
The box set is probably better than any modern series you are watching today. Make the switch. GET IN THE ZONE!

Pebbles- Girlfriend

YESSSS
Love everything about this times 80 (hahaha)

Punch lines partnered with truth

WOWZERS; YONKERS

The most exciting thing to happen in hip hop for a while.
Odd Future Wolfgang Kill Them All's ring leader TYLER THE CREATOR.
He directed the video too.
Insane and beautiful.
His 2nd solo record drops in April, on XL.

CREEP "Days"

Everything about this is intense and beautiful and amazing
Featuring the XX's Romy on vocals

Friday, February 4, 2011

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Saw BLACK SWAN for the second time last night.
I don't think I've seen a film capture the brutality of performance quite like it.
Thats' what it did for me.
Loved the homages, the hilarity, the sincerity, the transition.
I think many directors could have made this into a trashy single-white-female syndrome of a movie.
But it's all about the SELF.

P.G TIPS

Best English Breakfast tea out there. When it comes to a quick morning cup, non loose leaf....

M.I.A ViCKi LEEKX

M.I.A just tracked the first 10 minutes of her totally radical ViCKi LEEKX mixtape. (a.k.a it's a 'film clip' for the first 10 min)
You can check it here.

ROXANNE'S REVENGE

Roxanne Shante was 14 when she rapped this.
Just went into Marley Marl's appartment and laid it straight down.
Then lots of beef blew up.
Shante is the auntay of rap!
This is the real version.

ANGOSTURA BITTERS

A little bit of bitters goes a long way.
A swig of this= instant swag.

Made from a secret formula using a unique blend of natural herbs and spices.
The 'secret' was developed in 1824 by Dr J.G.B Siegert, a Surgeon general in Simon Bolivar's army in Venezuela.
Some facts: 44% alcohol (the whole bottle). Woah!
It stains, so be careful when pouring
Apparently it's a great mosquito repellent! Bye Bye disgusting chemically gross Rid!
It tempers the acidity of citrus, for those of you who are sensitive to acid.
It's the bomb!!!!!!

LIL B: Ellen Degeneres/I'm Miley Cyrus

Probably not the best indication/ representation of Lil B's (the based god's) free association meditative rap. Though the style and minimalism is a constant, like in all of his other work. I love how slow and exposed this stuff is. This is a funnier example of his flow and being, but the guy can get deep. Real deep. It's truth music.
You might know him fro the group 'The Pack'.
Another interesting thing going on in the sub atomic world of rap. So many veins running through hip hop right now, it's exciting.
