The Lost Weekend- Billy Wilder

Possibly one of the greatest films ever made. Billy Wilder needs no introduction here, when you're in my house. This film is the most brutal film, ever, about alcoholism or any substance abuse for that matter, probably because it doesn't aim to shock, like film nowadays do. A subject that's very close to home for me.
So amazingly good and gripping and full of Wilder magic.

L'Argent- Robert Bresson

There's a sequence from 'Pickpocket' somewhere on this blog. Bresson is one of my favourite filmmakers. Tied with Bergman and Herzog. I recently re watched L'Argent (thanks to Melbourne Cinematheque) and it made me like it even more.

EL-P/AB-SOUL/KILLER MIKE= HIP HOP WINS!

It's been a big couple of weeks for hip hop music. Or at least, the hip hop music that really speaks to me. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of the myriads of millions of hip hop bubbles floating around the intersphere, but at the end of the day, we spend more time in our heads and hearts than we do in the club.
Terrorist threats' is the best track of Ab-Soul's Control System. And Ab-Soul is the best rapper in the Black Hippy crew. These are just opinions.
Check out the video. Featuring Danny Brown and Jhene Aiko (!) and the killer chorus line of
"IF ALL THE GANGS IN THE WORLD UNIFY/WE STAND A CHANCE AGAINST THE MILITARY TONIGHT"

EL-P!!!! El Producto. Nuff said. Produced the entirety of his own Cancer For Cure and Killer Mike's
R.A.P Music. Both so good.

SIC

I'm loving my copy of Dark Entries reissue of a compilation of songs by 80's Belgium cold wave band SIC. The record is called 'Thought noises' and I highly recommend it.

The Vanishing

I lived in San Francisco in 2002. There were amazing bands and venues on every corner, between there and Oakland. The Coachwhips, Erase Errata, Deerhoof, Oxbow, Tussle, Hella, Numbers,  The Vanishing and many, many more.
I got to see all those bands, lots.
The Vanishing are so hauntingly good. I just came across 'Songs For Psychotic Children' tonight, when I was looking for a record to wash the dishes to, and I stumbled upon it in my collection and, now my hands are all warm and mood is sombre.
I'm very lucky to have seen them.

SPK-Metal Dance

You know, I always go on and on about Severed Heads being one of my favourite Australian 'bands', and it's really quite rude of me not to mention fellow Sydney (industrial noise) group SPK in the same breath, because Metal Dance is one of my favourite 12''s that I own, and I'm just a bit upset at myself that I haven't mentioned this yet. Very rude.

VATICAN SHADOW/PRURIENT

One of my favourite releases this year has been Vatican Shadow's Kneel Before religious Icons. Vatican Shadow is Prurient's Dominick Fernow.
Interestingly, Prurient's'Bermuda Drains was one of my favourite records of last year. The man creates a mood. It's motif music. He really puts you in there. It's filmic. The Vatican Shadow stuff is like war on repeat, because the truth is, war is always on repeat. This is political music. Big respect.

SUZANNE CIANI

Absolute hero of mine. Pianist/composer/Electronic music innovator. Suzanne made records (now days, she's a very big New Age music composer), designed sound for pinball machines, movies and commercials. Imagine this in the 1970's.

Watch Suzanne at work designing sounds for the Xenon pinball machine!

One of my favourite pieces of hers:

Jennifer Paige- Crush

Something you may not have known about me is that this is definitely one of my favourite pop songs of the 90's. Jennifer Paige pretty much came and went with this song, like she sacrificed her career for it or something. It's so good. And she's so gorgeous. And she has another song called 'Sober', but I think she's talking about love in that song (It's over/and I'm sober). I thought that was double cool. 'Crush' is amazing. In the video, when Jennifer is swinging on a swing on top of a cliff, I want to catch her, mid motion, and tell her to be careful!
